West Indies stormed into the semi-finals of the Women’s T20 World Cup with a thrilling run chase against England in Dubai, knocking their opponents out of the tournament at the group stage.

Chasing 142, the West Indies put on a commanding display, led by opener Qiana Joseph, who struck a crucial 52 from 38 balls, despite being dropped five times. Captain Hayley Matthews also contributed with a half-century in a dominant opening stand of 102, which saw the West Indies race to 67-0 in the powerplay.

England, plagued by sloppy fielding, struggled to contain the aggressive West Indian batting. Joseph was given multiple reprieves, including missed chances from Sophia Dunkley, Alice Capsey, and Maia Bouchier, which proved costly. Though both Joseph and Matthews departed within two overs, Deandra Dottin’s quickfire 27 from 19 balls ensured the momentum stayed with the West Indies.

Earlier, England had posted a competitive 141-7, thanks to Nat Sciver-Brunt’s unbeaten 57. However, the loss of captain Heather Knight, who retired hurt on 21 with a tight calf, weakened England’s defence. This victory marks West Indies’ first T20 win over England since 2018 and seals their place in the semi-finals, where they will face New Zealand on Friday. (JC)
