Washington is said to be pushing for a public statement that Iran will not fire at commercial vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
Shipping in the Strait of Hormuz has plunged during the renewed fighting, dealing a new blow to energy markets already reeling from the biggest supply disruption in history.
