Householders under siege by red millipedes are being advised to be cautious in handling them, but not to be crushed by their prevalence.
Retired consultant entomologist Ian Gibbs said the Rocky Red millipede, which he first spotted in Barbados about six years ago, was not native to the island nor was he sure how they came here.
They are also a nuisance in parts of Florida, United States.
“The idea of them coming in was probably either on containers or in boxes from overseas or in plant material, whether it be live plants or cut flowers or something like that, or even produce. That was, in my mind, the easiest way for them to get in here,” he said.
