There are times when the level of cruelty in the highest manslaughter case will be greater than that of a case of murder.
It is for that reason, said Justice Pamela Beckles yesterday, that Haniyfa Reza White’s starting sentence for murdering her former best friend 18 years ago was 30 years in jail.
However, while White had been quick to portray herself and her children as victims, said the judge, she was there to “love and care” for her children and witness their accomplishments.
“The deceased’s children were deprived of this because of your actions that day which changed their lives drastically and negatively from that day,” Justice Beckles told the convicted murderer who will spend 8 659 days, or just over 23 years, after deductions.
