History-maker Bajan wrestler Jessica Derrell in Serbia now Loop Barbados

Belgrade, Serbia is hosting the 9-day 2023 World Wrestling Championships from September 16 to September 24 and Barbados has a wrestler in contention.

Jessica Derrell, who won a bronze medal in the non-Olympic category for women 58kg in the Pan American Senior Championships in Buenos Aires, Argentina in May 2023, will be the first female athlete in the Caribbean to participate in the Paris Olympics qualifier in Belgrade, Serbia.

Before the World Wrestling Championships, Derrell had the opportunity to get in some great mat time and learn new techniques and such as she participated in a World training camp. The camp was funded by Olympic Solidarity.

Derrell is there with over 500 athletes who will be participating in this training camp. The athletes will be exposed to the best trainers in the world. The training camp will give her the necessary tools to progress in the sport, not only at this qualifier but also for the next Olympic qualifier and the Pan American Beach Wrestling Championships in Acapulco, Mexico in March 2024.

The Barbados Wrestling Association is expressing its sincere thanks to Olympic Solidarity, United World Wrestling, and the Barbados Olympic Association for giving Derrell this opportunity.

On this trip, Derrell is accompanied by her coach Yaima Payne.

Derrell will compete in the 62kg division for a place in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The medical examination, weigh-in and qualifications for the 62kg division in Wednesday, September 20, the semi-finals and repechages in the morning of Thursday, September 21, and the finals and award ceremonies in the evening.
