Humour and good ole Bajan cooking

It was evident that the excitement and exhilaration of standing on the Miss Universe 2018 stage in Muang Thong Thani, Thailand has not left Miss Universe Barbados Meghan Theobalds as she sat down with local media to discuss her journey.

Theobalds is Barbados’ 16th Miss Universe Barbados, and she represented her island proudly amongst the 93 nations last Sunday night at the Impact Arena. The 27-year-old wowed the globe with her beautiful national costume influenced by flying fish and designed by Douglas John and her stunning gown which was created by Ohio-based Henri’s.

Addressing the media at Yello Barbados’ Bellville, St Michael headquarters, Theobalds described the contest as an amazing experience. She formed fast friends with Miss Netherlands Rahima Dirkse, Miss Bahamas Danielle Grant, Miss Belgium Zoe Brunet and Miss Mauritius Varasha Ragoobarsing.

Theobalds shared that she promoted Barbados’ cuisine (her love for fishcakes) and also the friendliness and humour of her people.

“They asked us what is the best thing about the people in your country and I said first of all, ‘our sense of humour’. That is something I am so proud of because I think we are the funniest people on earth. I just pushed our people and our food. Our fun [sense of humour], our ability to look at the positive things and our fishcakes are amazing,” said the reigning Miss Universe Barbados.

Reliving that once in a lifetime moment when she said her name and island on the stage, Theobalds indicated that due to her reign people were beginning to recognize the immense talent that existed in Barbados.

“I have definitely made people sit up and recognize that Barbados has talent. Not just I, but Shannon (Harris) and Leslie (Chapman-Andrews) did an excellent job as well and I think I just compounded on that – that we do have talent here. I am hoping [that the] next girl [is] able to break through in a way that I wasn’t able to break through during this time. I am proud of what I accomplished and I know, based on the feedback, that I did a good job; not a good job for a Caribbean person but a good job in general. Because of that, I am hoping for the next girl that people pay a bit more attention.”

Theobalds also encouraged interested Miss Universe Barbados applicants to “go for it”. She stated that she learned more about herself during her journey.

“You gain more confidence by the end of the process. You learn so much and become so in tune with [yourself] that you have no choice but to gain a little more confidence than when you entered the process. For that I am grateful because I know I am a strong 27-year-old woman who knows what she wants and knows how to apply lashes.” (KK)
