Barbados’ top jockey, Patrick Husbands is in a serious but stable condition in a hospital in Toronto, Canada, after a horse fell on him at the Woodbine Racetrack yesterday.

After having a remarkable day in the saddle on Saturday with three wins and a second place in the Stakes & Trophy feature, Husbands was in the parade ring aboard filly Islay Inlet when she suddenly started to “act up” and threw him down.

“My pelvis broke in the front and back and I have to put a plate in the front and back,” a distraught Husbands told the Line & Length Network after his first surgery.

“It took me by surprise, but I want to say to all my fans that I am having two surgeries and I want to tell all them (my fans) I will be okay, and I will be home for Christmas.”

Well-known horse-racing commentator and correspondent Robert Corbin watched the incident unfold from his living room in Barbados when he was watching the Woodbine Racing Channel online.

“I immediately said ‘oh my goodness’ because it looked serious. The horse appeared to be irritated. According to the temperature reading and listening to the local commentators outside was very cold, so I don’t know if that played a part,” Corbin said.

Husbands was awarded the Sovereign Award for Outstanding Jockey a then-unprecedented four straight years between 1999 and 2002. He made his first Kentucky Derby appearance in 2006 riding Seaside Retreat for trainer Mark Casse.
Husbands has earned over 3,000 victories at the Woodbine Racetrack.
