The sick building syndrome has struck another state agency, forcing staff off the job.
The Barbados Youth Service (BYS) today became the latest arm of Government to be affected by environmental problems, including mold, which has so far caused about five of the 40 staff and managers to go on sick leave.
Barbados TODAY understands that this morning the workers at the BYS’s Warrens, St Michael headquarters signed in for duty, but soon returned home.
When Barbados TODAY arrived at the scene this afternoon, only a handful of employees and Director Hally Haynes were present.
Workmen were also already there removing the mold-infested ceiling tiles and replacing them with new ones.
One worker who did not want to be identified, said environmental officials visited the facility and provided management with a list of issues which must be fixed to ensure the offices are suitable for occupation, but did not order an official closure.
The employee noted that some colleagues had opted to occupy the lower section of the building, while others were staying out altogether.
Barbados TODAY was also informed that officials were recommending the BYS be temporarily relocated to the Youth Division at Sky Mall, Haggatt Hall, St Michael, which itself has had similar environmental challenges.
Meanwhile, Delcia Burke, the senior official of the National Union of Public Workers who is handling this matter, could not be reached for comment.
