HAITI – Violent protests erupt over fuel prices

PORT AU PRINCE, Haiti, CMC – At least three people were reportedly killed on Friday as Haitians protested an announcement by government of a hike in fuel prices.

According to police two protestors were fatally shot when they clashed with lawmen in the capital while the third person killed was a security guard of a former political candidate who was stopped at a barricade.

Government had announced that the price of gasoline would increased by 38 per cent, diesel by 47 per cent and kerosene would see an increase of 51 per cent, this weekend.

However, hundreds took to the streets in protest shortly after the announcement.

According to government officials, the fuel price rise is in compliance with an agreement made with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Earlier this year, the agreement signed with the IMF, implied the ending of subsidies for petroleum products, which are a major source of the budget deficit.

The agreement also include increased spending on social services and infrastructure and improved tax collection in an effort to modernize the economy.

Opposition groups say they expect more protests throughout the country Saturday.
