Make wise choices!

“Be kind to yourself and others, make wise choices, show good manners, and don’t be afraid to fail, since you can learn from your mistakes.”

Local pediatrician Dr Patricia Inniss gave this counsel to the eight little ones who formed the first graduating class from the recently established Adonai Academy day care centre and pre-school and their parents this morning during their graduation ceremony.

As she delivered the feature address, Dr Inniss pointed out that this step in the children’s lives was “scary yet exciting . . . for both the children and their parents”. However, she said it was up to the parents and teachers to lead them on the right path in life.

She counseled the parents to keep track of basic elements like the children’s hygiene standards, and teaching the children good manners, such as being thankful, helpful, and demonstrating kindness and the willingness to help others.

“Also, in the interest of your children’s health, don’t forget the importance of play in their development; ensure they get at least 12 hours of sleep, limit their screen time to two hours; encourage them to drink more water and avoid the drinks high in sugar, and limit fast food to once a month.”

She also urged parents to foster a love of reading in their children.

Beyond that, “Experts say that children know the differences between right and wrong from as early as six years old, so make sure that as parents you instill the correct moral values in them, as this is one of the most important lessons you can teach them,” she added.

During the event, the school’s owners, Ricardo and Toni-Ann Alexander, made presentations to some people who had made significant contributions to the school since its establishment two years ago, including Janelle Corbin, the mother of one of the students in the graduating class, and Kimberley Rollins, the caregiver who had looked after the children from the time they entered the school.
