In self defence

A 35-year-old St Thomas man has been remanded to jail in connection with the August 31 incident in which two women were chopped multiple times at Road View, St Peter.

Rommel Antonio Larone Daniel of Airy Cot, who was the subject of a wanted bulletin, was captured by police on Saturday, September 16 at Canefield, St Thomas.

He appeared before Magistrate Wanda Blair in the Holetown Magistrates’ Court today where he pleaded guilty to aggravated burglary and was committed to the High Court for sentencing. Daniel also owned up to a charge of unlawful possession of camouflage for which he will have to serve one month in prison after failing to pay the required $300 fine.

However, he was not required to enter a plea with respect to the charge that he entered the house of Ayoka Lewis – the mother of his child – on August 31 as a trespasser and caused grievous bodily harm to her and Cynclaire Cox, while armed with a cutlass.

The accused man, who was not represented by an attorney, also allegedly assaulted Lewis occasioning her actual bodily harm on July 4.

However, in making an application for bail, Daniel suggested that he acted in self defence.

“Understand this Ma’am, the charge on July 4 and August 31, . . . it is not black and white where people just [check] on the side . . . and say this is what happen,” he said.

Daniel also explained that in addition to being the father of four children, “I got a girl pregnant all now”.

However, his bail application was denied.

The accused man, who also faces two separate charges related  to rape on August 29, is due to re-appear in the District ‘F’ Magistrates’ Court on October 13 and in the District ‘E’ Magistrates’ Court on October 17 in relation to the outstanding offences.
