Crash victim on the mend

Nakisha Shepherd, the lone survivor from last Sunday’s tragic car crash, which claimed the lives of four young women, is showing signs of improvement.

According to Shepherd’s father Richard Holder, the 23-year-old, who has been in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital since the accident, was now moving some of her limbs.

He said while she had suffered a concussion, received a gash to her face along with minor injuries to her hands, he was happy she had survived the ordeal.

“So far she is slowly recovering. She is moving her foot and her hands and the swelling is going down. Between Sunday and today she has shown great improvement . . . . I told her I love her and she squeezed my finger. I told her that she is daddy’s little girl and I said that daddy is here and that I would always be there with her and she squeezed my thumb.

“It made me feel great because there is hope,” he said.

Holder said he was thankful for the outpouring of support he had received from Barbados and overseas and he was confident that with continued prayer, his daughter would make a full recovery.

Cousins Shakira Shepherd, 22, and Shameka Shepherd, 23, along with 18-year-old Carey Brathwaite and Waveney Johnson, 25, died in the accident at Two Mile Hill, St Michael.

A candlelight vigil will be held tomorrow in Long Bay, St Philip in remembrance of the four women.
