Know your status

The Government Information Service’s HIV educational committee has called on men to get regular check-ups and know their HIV status.

Addressing a Men’s Personal Care workshop at Almond Bay Caterers, chair of the HIV committee Lisa Bayley said even though men are more likely to contract the virus, they are being tested in the later stages of infection.

“Men… we’re still not seeing a difference in terms of their sexual behaviours. There is a perception by men that they can handle everything,” Bayley said, noting that they are reluctant to seek medical help  unless symptoms are serious. Women, however, would not hesitate to visit the doctor.

Some of the participants at the workshop.

Deputy Chief of Community Development, Alexis Nurse echoed Bayley’s concerns, staying that the virus is transmitted easier from man to woman than from woman to man.

The weekend workshop is part of a series of seminars planned by the committee under the National HIV Commission’s strategy, and targets met, sex workers and the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community.

Bayley said they will work with these groups “to maintain the lower levels of transmission”.

“We’ve decided to focus this year and perhaps for the next three years specifically on men,” she added. (KK)
