Brazil Carnival Claims 189 Lives


News Americas, SAO PAULO, Brazil, Thurs. Mar. 10, 2011: The just-concluded carnival in Brazil claimed 189 lives due to highway car crashes, according to the country’s Federal Highway Police.

The deaths marked an increase of almost 30 percent increase over last year’s carnival season according to the daily O Globo.

Police also reported that there were 3,563 highway accidents resulting in 2,152 injured victims. Carnival ended Tuesday night in Brazil ahead of the beginning of the Lenten season Wednesday.
