CaribWorldNews, BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Tues. Dec. 1, 2009: Serena Williams returned from a win in Barbados over the weekend to an $82,500 fine for her profanity-laced outburst during the September U.S. Open.
Williams, who thrilled the 4,000 strong Bajan crowd who showed up to see her win the charity match against World No. 4 Caroline Wozniacki at The Gymnasium of The Garfield Sobers Sports Complex, was fined by Grand Slam administrator Bill Babcock after nearly three months of deliberation.
Williams won the Barbados match 6-4 and got a standing ovation but could be suspended from future U.S. Open matches if she commits another major infraction in the next two years.
Williams cursed and physically threatened a lineswoman at the 2009 Open after the woman called her for a foot fault in her semifinal against the tournament`s eventual winner, Kim Clijsters of Belgium.
